It’s no wonder Wheeler Peak campground in the Great Basin National Park is my favorite campground within a half days drive of Las Vegas. As you awake in
the morning you’re greeted by the sounds of the songbirds, the deer grazing in the meadow, and the creek meandering by your tent.
When the heat, and constant air conditioning of summer and early fall gets to be too much for those of us living in Las Vegas the quickest and easiest way to get a break is head to Mt Charleston for a hike. But with over 50 miles of designated trails to choose from where does the newcomer go first.
No matter how many times I visit Zion National Park I'm humbled by its
majesty. With sandstone cliffs that loom as high as 4000 feet above you it's
a reminder of how small we are in the face of time and nature.

more often than not they're places I find on road trips.
By the time you’ve traveled the 90 miles Northwest from Las Vegas to get to
the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, the area beyond the entrance seems
unremarkable. That assessment has caused more than a few people to miss out
on some notable wildlife viewing opportunities.
As I stood online at the Black Canyon River Raft head quarters I was struck
by the level of professionalism. Outside there were several busses with the
Black Canyon logo on them, inside the offices were neat and clean, and the
amount of merchandise available was impressive.
