Curtain Rises on Smith Center this weekend

The Smith Center for The Performing Arts opens its doors this weekend with a black tie gala to celebrate the debut of one of downtown Las Vegas' biggest cultural and redevelopment project. The center is the cornerstone of Symphony Park which developers say will eventually include residences, a casino hotel and other projects.

Governor Sandoval Hosting Event to Connect Banks and Struggling Homeowners

This weekend homeowners can meet face-to-face with representatives from Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Citi, and others to get help with their mortgages. Governor Sandoval and the Nevada Department of Business industry host the "Home Means Nevada" help for homeowners event at the Cashman Center on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. Homeowners can get help with lowering mortgage payments, principal reduction and short sale assistance. We talk with the director of the Nevada Department of Business and Industry about the type of help homeowners can get and why they need it.

Latin Chamber Executive Competes to be Next State Superintendent

The search for the next Nevada State Superintendent has been whittled down to three candidates. One of the finalists is Rene Cantu Jr. executive director of the Latin Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation. Cantu has 20 years experience in higher education most recently as Nevada State College's vice president of multicultural affairs. Cantu hopes to replace current Nevada Superintendent, Keith Rheault who is retiring. Cantu joins us to talk about why he wants to be the next superintendent of schools for the state.

Three Democratic legislators failed to report campaign costs related to living expenses last year. The Las Vegas Sun reports those legislators have not reported money used for rent and other living expenses and that Secretary of State, Ross Miller is looking into the matter.

Western High School Principal, Neddy Alvarez Talks Turnaround

Western High School is one of Clark County School District's five turnaround schools. Western High is mostly Hispanic and located in a working class neighborhood with many English language learners. For years the school has struggled with academic achievement. With increased federal funding this year Principal, Neddy Alvarez wants the school's engineering and technology programs to be emphasized, but, it's a tough road for Alvarez and her students where dropout rates have been a problem.

Meantime, this year filers can use an updated IRS smartphone app to check on their return and get help on any questions they may have about filing. What's Inside the Mob Museum

The Mob Museum opens on Valentine's Day and will feature artifacts from world famous gangsters and law enforcement agents that brought them down. One of the biggest attractions at the museum is a section of wall from the Chicago warehouse where the Valentine's Day Massacre took place in 1929.

A Push for Better Early Education in Nevada

In Nevada there are a number of early education programs that have shown success. The problem state officials are finding however, is that while some programs show significant progress there isn't enough being done to reach more kids across the state who need Pre-kindergarten education. In Nevada, less than two percent of kids get state funded Pre-kindergarten education. And more than half of Pre-kindergarten kids in Nevada aren't in any kind of program.
