The newly established Office of Gun Violence Prevention will meet with Nevada lawmakers Wednesday to discuss specific recommendations to help states respond to gun violence.
The Biden Administration’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention will discuss its “Safer States Initiative,” with over a hundred state lawmakers at the White House on Wednesday.
Stephanie Feldman, director, explained the initiative focuses on several priorities
aimed at helping states reduce gun violence:
“First, establishing a statewide gun violence prevention office, much like the Biden-Harris Gun Violence Prevention Office. Number two, investing in evidence-informed solutions to prevent and respond to gun violence including through the use of community violence interventions and extreme risk protection orders, also known as red flag laws.”
Other priorities include providing support for victims and survivors. That could come in the form of federal funding, strengthening gun storage requirements, gun background checks, and, Feldman said, holding the gun industry accountable.
“The American people are asking for their elected officials to do more to reduce gun violence and save lives. That is a call to action the President hears again and again and the Vice President hears again and again when they are mourning with people who have lost loved ones to gun violence.”
The Office of Gun Violence Prevention also wants to establish an official method of responding to communities in need, much like FEMA responds to disasters.
