How would you describe yourself to voters?

I’m proud to be first person in my family to graduate from college, which has led me to value empathy, equity and determination. My family immigrated from the Philippines and if I win I will be the first Filipinx Legislator in the state of Nevada. I’m running to ensure all Nevadans have an equitable opportunity to succeed and that Assembly District 14 residents can thrive instead of only focusing on surviving. I’m a pragmatic social justice advocate who is a military spouse and ready to work on behalf of all of our families.

I am a former Clark County School District (CCSD) teacher, Special Project Manager for the CCSD Superintendent's Office and education non-profit Founder & Executive Director. I have served on many nonprofit boards and committees and I’m proud to have been awarded the Las Vegas NAACP’s Legacy Builder Award this past year, the Asian Community Development Council’s InspirAsian Award in 2021, the Public Education Foundation’s Community Hero Award in 2020 for my community work during COVID-19 and the Boston University Young Alumni Award in 2019. I have a B.S. from Boston University, an M.Ed. from UNLV's College of Education and an ED.M. from Harvard's Graduate School of Education.

What do you see as the top issues in this campaign?

The top issues in this campaign are those that deeply impact families and working Nevadans directly. I believe the role of a Legislator is to ensure state policy can solve societal inequities at scale. When knocking on doors in my community and speaking to neighbors, people care about rising costs of living, gas prices and safety in our schools. I hope to be a Legislator that can translate kitchen table issues into pragmatic and effective state policy that benefits working class Nevadans especially in places like Assembly District 14.

In your opinion, how would you rate the state’s response to the pandemic? Why?

I believe the state did the best it could with the resources, circumstances and options it had. As the spouse of a healthcare worker, I saw every day the sacrifice and determination healthcare workers in our state had to support their fellow neighbors– no matter the cost to themselves or their families. As a non-profit executive, I also was part of and witnessed vast collaboration between entities and organizations to nimbly find a way to meet the needs of our students and families while empowering them to also be part of the solution. I believe we must invest in state infrastructure to ensure funded multi-pronged solutions for the next emergency that happens.

Education and local government officials have long asked lawmakers to change the way the state assesses property taxes. That includes raising the current tax threshold. Should lawmakers consider raising those thresholds? If not, what is the best way for governments to raise money for local programs?

I look forward to working on and tackling root cause issues that have led to inequities in our state. I would have to research and thoroughly understand the issue before taking a position, but I do know we need an effective and pragmatic approach to diversify revenue and invest in Nevada’s young people without creating adverse unintended consequences for others in our state. I believe I have the experience and motivation to want to learn, understand and contribute to creating solutions for these issues while ensuring a communitydependent lens is the foundation.
