How would you describe yourself to voters?
A vote for “Casino for State Assembly” means a vote for a better tomorrow for our children and our families in Nevada's Assembly District 12.
As a teacher who sees our education system on a daily basis, and a former candidate for the Nevada Board of Education, it hurts seeing Nevada currently ranking 35th in the nation for academic achievement and 50th in the overall national rankings. Our students deserve better. Our teachers deserve better. Our future deserves better.
As a community leader, I see all too often the impact Nevada's legislation has in the well-being of our families and communities. It is my promise to our Nevada voters that I will bring legislation to put a halt in Nevada's skyrocketing inflation, revolutionize our education system, and make our communities safe once again.
My candidacy will deliver to Nevada’s legislature the change that we owe to all future generations.
What do you see as the top issues in this campaign?
My threefold platform aims to bring much needed assistance for struggling Nevadans, revolutionize our education system, and making our communities safer.
1. Reducing skyrocketing inflation and providing assistance to struggling Nevadans. I will address the reduction of inflation in Nevada. I will achieve this by offering residents a one-time $400 gas card to cap the rising fuel cost. The above will accompany the temporal halting of fuel tax to reduce the cost of gas and diesel by .23 and .27 cents per gallon, respectively. There will be lower costs of groceries due to lower transportation costs. With reduced inflation, there are increased chances of offering free public transport. I will also expand funding for the local community organizations to help people purchase homes. Besides the homes, funds will also be directed to local food banks and pantries. As such, Nevadans will comfortably afford food in their homes.
2. Revolutionizing our education system to bring to Nevada's students the education they need to be successful in the 21st century. I will channel my efforts toward revamping and improving the education system of Nevada. This will easily be achieved through acknowledging and dealing with overcrowding by building more facilities. I will prioritize funding of schools to increase learning resources for the learners. I will address the school-to-prison pipeline by encouraging the involvement of both teachers and parents. I will consider the raising standards of teachers by increasing their welfare and compensation, besides funding their further training and development. I will encourage the involvement of all stakeholders of schools ranging from teachers to the whole community, in decision making regarding the running of classrooms and building of curriculum.
3. Bringing safety back to our communities. I will make Nevada communities safer by increasing the collaboration between the police and government agencies. Through cooperation, they will build trust with the community members and enhance their external relationships in the context of law enforcement. For instance, the police will participate in monthly educational and recreational opportunities for children to improve the perception of children regarding policing. Secondly, city officials, housing advocates, and developers must cooperate with residents, especially in advocating for safer housing designs and reducing illegal activities. A good example is developers working with city officials and funding “blighted” communities to reduce illegal activities. Additionally, I will push for direct investment in community-oriented solutions by health and community developers, such as increasing housing funding to eliminate homelessness.
In your opinion, how would you rate the state’s response to the pandemic? Why?
I would rate Nevada's response to the pandemic with a "C+" grade. Indeed, there were many lessons learned from the pandmic. Going forward, we have to remember, that there are still many Nevadans struggling today, even in the aftermath of the pandemic. Today we have Nevadans who are still struggling to get back back to work, fellow neighbors who are still dealing with the lost of loved ones, and those still dealing with food shortages.
Education and local government officials have long asked lawmakers to change the way the state assesses property taxes. That includes raising the current tax threshold. Should lawmakers consider raising those thresholds? If not, what is the best way for governments to raise money for local programs?
No, absolutely not! Nevadans are already way over taxed! We cannot afford any more taxes! The best way for governments to raise money for local programs is to create more private and public partnerships. Together, with both the private and public sectors working together, we can provide local programs the necessary funding they need and deserve.
