This Sun rises weekly
Over the past several months, the Greenspun clan has been embroiled in a civil war over efforts to dissolve the Las Vegas Sun’s longtime Joint Operating Agreement with the Review-Journal. Hammered out in 1989 and tweaked in 2005, the JOA keeps the Sun on corporate life support. However, in August, Sun Publisher Brian Greenspun sued to stop his three siblings from pursuing a plan to end the JOA. That lawsuit has since been thrown out on a technicality, but Brian Greenspun has publicly vowed to fight on.
But perhaps there’s a backup plan in the works? Pictured below is a prototype that’s been floating around media-buying circles for a product called The Sunday. Inside is a magazine-style mix of Sun news, politics, gaming, design-forward features and even Brian’s “Where I Stand” column — hm, almost as though this were positioning itself as a replacement for the Sun. The Greenspuns’ business publication, VEGAS INC, also gets it own branded hunk of editorial real state.
Is this a new Sun that will instead rise weekly? Via email, Brian would only say, “I would love to talk to you about this but we aren’t quite ready.” Las Vegas Sun Managing Editor Ric Anderson declined comment, offering only, “It’s going to be a very exciting project.”
