Fire Damages Former Catholic School Building In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fire badly damaged attic space of a former elementary school building where squatters had been living in downtown Las Vegas, but an official says no injuries were reported.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski says smoke was billowing and several people were still leaving the one-story former St. Joseph's Catholic School when firefighters arrived shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday.

A damage estimate wasn't immediately made and Szymanski says the cause of the fire is being investigated. The building is a few blocks east of Las Vegas Boulevard. It closed in 2013 after 65 years.
