LAS VEGAS (AP) — Family members say a man shot and killed by Las Vegas police after taking his mother hostage at gunpoint in their mobile home battled mental illness and drug addiction.
Joshua Squires' mother, Toni Squires, tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal her 32-year-old son was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and had trouble when he didn't take prescribed medication.
His sister says Joshua Squires he wasn't a bad guy but just got lost. The women don't dispute police accounts of the Monday shooting. Police say SWAT officers rescued Toni Squires and that Joshua Squires had a gun when he was killed.
