Las Vegas City Council Votes To Expand Camping, Sleeping Ban

The Las Vegas City Council voted 5 to 2 to expand a ban aimed at keeping homeless people from camping or sleeping in public.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the ban now includes a rule to keep public sidewalks clear during the times they’re scheduled to be cleaned.

During those times, it will be a misdemeanor crime to camp, sleep, lie, sit or otherwise obstruct city efforts to sanitize the sidewalks.

The city’s Department of Operations and Maintenance will post signs indicating what those hours are.

Supporters of the bill say it addressed a major health issue.

The City Council voted in November to outlaw camping and sleeping in public areas downtown, and in residential areas throughout the city - if there are beds available at established homeless shelters.

That part of the ordinance will be enforced starting February 1.

Councilwoman Olivia Diaz and Councilman Brian Knudsen voted against both bills.
