Native American Students Want UNLV To Ditch "Hey Reb!" Statue

Native American students are asking the University of Nevada Las Vegas to get rid of its “Hey Reb!” statue.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports it’s one of a list of things the school’s Native American Student Association says will make the campus feel more inclusive of indigenous people.

They suggest choosing a different mascot and replacing the statue with one of a Southern Paiute woman, with a plaque acknowledging the Paiute land the campus is built on.

The group also wants UNLV to offer Paiute language classes.

University spokesman Tony Allen says he’s not aware of any official talks about what the organization is asking for.
