ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A backlog of criminal, civil and probate cases in northeast Nevada has state lawmakers being asked to add another judge to the state court bench in Elko.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports that a proposal drafted for the state Legislature when it convenes next month would add a third court to hear cases that currently pile up before judges Al Kacin and Nancy Porter.
The measure has support from the Nevada Supreme Court.
Assembly Bill 43 also would add one judge to Washoe County Family Court, bringing that bench to seven departments.
The busiest courts in the state, in Las Vegas, would add a total of 15 judges.
Clark County District Court would get six new judges, totaling 38 departments, while Family Court would add nine judges, totaling 29.
