Grand Canyon's North Rim Tourism Officials Hope To Make It 4-Season Destination

Promoters of tourism at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim say reduced snowfall in recent years could lead to an expanded visiting season.

Currently, overnight lodging closes every October 15, reopening in mid-May, and proponents of a longer tourist season say they would like to see the North Rim become a four-season destination.

The 30-year average for snowfall at the North Rim is just over 11 feet, but over the past decade, the average has been closer to eight feet.

The North Rim’s elevation is about 8,000 feet, with cooler temperatures than the South Rim and much less tourist traffic.

The tourism director for Kane County, Utah, says she doesn’t anticipate any major changes in visiting season for five to  10 years.
