Court Appearance Set In Nevada Church Killing

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The 48-year-old northern Nevada man accused of fatally shooting a longtime volunteer firefighter in the Mormon church they both attended now has a court date on a murder charge.

John K. O'Connor is scheduled to make his initial appearance at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in New River Township Justice Court in Fallon.

O'Connor is accused of killing 61-year-old Charles E. "Bert" Miller and shooting his brother, Duane Miller of Utah, in the ankle during Sunday's services in Fallon 60 miles east of Reno.

O'Connor later surrendered at his home about a block away.

Police say they knew each other from the church. But investigators have been unable to establish any possible motive for the slaying.

It's not clear if O'Connor has a lawyer or will be appointed one Wednesday.

Fallon police and city officials declined repeated requests for comment on Tuesday.
