Clark County To Ask Congress To Release Acres Of Public Land For Development

After years of discussions, Clark County officials hope to have a resolution together in June that would ask Congress to open more than 38,000 acres of public land to development.

The plan is meant to ease land constraints as the population in Southern Nevada grows.

The Nevada Independent reports the county has met privately with local governments, environmentalists, federal agencies, developers and other stakeholders about the proposal.

The county hasn’t had any public meetings about the proposal – but they could happen as soon as next month.

Under the proposed resolution, Clark County would seek to protect nearly 400,000 acres of land as wilderness or critical habitat for desert tortoise.

The county is still in talks with other municipalities, such as Henderson and Las Vegas, about how the land would be used.

According to the report, county commissioners could hear the issue as soon as June 19.
