RENO, Nev. (AP) — The family of a man who died after being bound by Reno authorities in a hogtied position is settling part of a wrongful death lawsuit for $75,000.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reported Wednesday the father of Thomas Purdy settled with the Peppermill casino for $50,000 and city of Reno for $25,000. They declined to comment.
The case is continuing against Washoe County.
Purdy stopped breathing in a county jail cell after a struggle with Peppermill security guards and Reno police officers who arrested him on trespassing charges in 2015.
Purdy continued to struggle against deputies who tried to remove his restraints once he arrived at the jail.
An investigation by Sparks police found no criminal wrongdoing.
The lawsuit was the third wrongful death claim against the Washoe County Sheriff's Office in the past two years.
