The Reno City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to move forward on building a second homeless shelter.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports, however, that the city doesn’t actually have the money to build or operate the shelter.
The city is trying to expand the number of beds available to homeless people suffering during the winter. The homeless population in Reno has soared as the price of housing has skyrocketed.
Designing the shelter itself and planning how to use the five-acre site on Sage Street will cost about $10,000.
Reno’s current shelter has 310 beds which are all full, as well as the overflow with another 138 beds. Next month the council will address an ordinance that prohibits more than one shelter from being built in the city of Reno.
