Solar Industry Opposes Move That Could Bring Tariffs on Solar Cells

Solar industry executives are opposing a move by a Federal Trade Commission that could lead to tariffs on solar cells and make solar panels more expensive.

The Las Vegas Sun reports the U.S. International Trade Commission will vote Sept. 22 on a case dealing with imports of solar cells, which are used to make solar panels.

Solar lobbyists say that if the requested tariff is approved, the price of solar panel would double and cause up to 88,000 people to lose their jobs.

In Nevada alone, that means about 2,000 jobs. The solar industry was barely brought back to life in the 2017 legislative session when lawmakers voted to reinstate favorable rates for rooftop solar customers.

The commission will give its recommendation to President Donald Trump in November, he would then have two months to make a decision.
