Nevada’s head education administrator spoke out Thursday against suggestions that declines in state funding contributed to Clark County School District’s budget shortfall.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Steve Canavero told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that CCSD’s estimated $80 million deficit can be attributed to the district’s own inept planning.
In a statement to the newspaper, Canavero said: “to blame the state is erroneous.”
In response, CCSD Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky denied that the district is blaming the state for its fiscal issues.
Skorkowsky outlined the shortfall and the hiring freeze prompted by the budget crunch in a letter to principals earlier this week. The superintendent also said the shortfall will force layoffs around the district.
