Former NFL football star O.J. Simpson appears via video for his parole hearing at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Lovelock, Nev., on Thursday, July 20, 2017.

After a botched robbery attempt in a Palace Station hotel room, OJ Simpson served nine years in prison.

Some say the lengthy sentence was payback for his non-conviction in a double-murder in the 1990s.

But the state parole board gave him his freedom last week. He'll be out of prison in October.

John L. Smith was at the hearing, which was simulcast to reporters removed from the hearing room. He said though Simpson looked relieved, he was still making excuses for his behavior.
