An online fundraiser for a Las Vegas police officer facing criminal charges for the chokehold death of a man inside a Las Vegas casino has raised more than $30,000 since going live Tuesday.
The Las Vegas Police Protective Association created a relief fund on the website GoFundMe for Metro officer Kenneth Lopera. The department announced this week it was pursuing charges of involuntary manslaughter and oppression under the color of office for the death of Tashii Brown.
Lopera used his stun gun multiple times and placed Brown in an unauthorized chokehold to subdue Brown, who then died. The Clark County coroner’s office determined Brown died of asphyxiation due to police restraint and labeled his death a homicide.
The union is covering all of Lopera’s legal expenses.
