Reno Women's March Draws Historic Crowd

Organizers were expecting maybe a few hundred participants in last week's Women's March in Reno, so when close to 3,000 RSVP'd, they considered that a win.

On march day, however, more than 10,000 people gathered in the streets near the federal courthouse, to stand in solidarity for the rights of groups who have felt marginalized in the current political climate.

With a population of around 235,000 - that many people turning out for a march was more than the Biggest Little City had ever seen. Here's some perspective. The greater Las Vegas area has a population of a little more than 2 million and had a turnout of roughly 15,000 for the Women's March.

So why so much interest in a place that's not exactly known as a hotbed of political activism?

March organizer Tanja Hayes joins KNPR to talk about the turnout.
