LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas health officials say they've identified the first human case of St. Louis encephalitis in nearly a decade.
The Southern Nevada Health District on Friday announced that a man over the age of 50 has been infected by a more serious, neuroinvasive form of the mosquito-borne virus.
The man who isn't being identified has already been treated and released from the hospital.
He marks the first human case of St. Louis encephalitis in Clark County since 2007.
Officials had warned in June that there had been a noted spike in the number of mosquitoes infected with St. Louis encephalitis.
Most people infected by this strain of encephalitis either never get sick or have mild illness with fever and headache.
