BYU Under Federal Investigation Due To Honor Code

Brigham Young University says federal authorities are investigating the campus process for handling reports of sexual assault.

A university spokeswoman said Monday the school learned last Thursday about the investigation by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights.

The Utah Department of Public Safety also launched an investigation in May about whether campus police properly report sexual assault cases, following complaints about school honor code investigations of students who make sexual assault complaints.

As it is currently written, the code allows for investigations about the prior sexual conduct of alleged victims.

The federal education office doesn't talk about investigations.

The federal probe is expected to look at compliance with Title IX guidelines, which could threaten federal funding and BYU's ability to provide federal financial aid to students.
