Petition To Move Nye County Seat From Tonopah Filed

An effort is underway in Nye County to relocate the county seat from Tonopah to a different location.

The Pahrump Valley Times reports a Pahrump resident has submitted a petition with nearly 1,400 signatures to the Nye County Commission that would call for a ballot item this fall to move the county seat.

If placed on the ballot and subsequently approved by voters, Tonopah would cease to be the county seat.

The petition in question, though, does not say where a new county seat would be established.

There is, however, a second petition calling for moving the county seat to Pahrump, though it has not been approved.

Also unclear is what could happen if that petition does not make the ballot or is not approved, but that abolishing Tonopah as the county seat is approved.

Tonopah has far fewer residents than Pahrump.

The latest census estimates show Tonopah has over 2,500 residents, while Pahrump has just over 35,000.
