Henderson Court Work Crews Add Fire Stations To Weekly List

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Henderson city officials say workers in a court-ordered alternative sentencing program have taken over weekly landscaping duties around the city's nine fire stations.

City alternative sentencing chief Ian Massy says that having Henderson Municipal Court defendants do the work lets city workers focus on other projects and gives the workers a chance to work off fines at a rate of $10 per hour.

The Alternative Sentencing Work Program was launched in November 2009 and reorganized in late 2014.

It's credited with saving the city more than $150,000 last year.

The program enlists defendants who can't afford to pay their fines or who qualify for community service instead of jail time to remove graffiti from block walls, board up vacant homes, maintain city-owned trails, clean city-owned lots and remove litter.
