LAS VEGAS (AP) — Democratic congressional candidate Morse Arberry Jr. still owes more than $120,000 to the state from a 2011 campaign finance fraud conviction.
The Nevada Controller's Office says the former longtime assemblyman now owes more than the original debt because of late fees. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports two collection agencies were on the case, but Arberry told them he can't find a job and make payments.
Arberry's one of several Democrats seeking the 4th Congressional District seat held by Republican Rep. Cresent Hardy. Arberry served in the Assembly from 1984-2010.
He was charged with six felonies for depositing about $120,000 in campaign checks into his personal account, but those were dropped when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of fraudulent appropriation of money.
Arberry didn't return calls seeking comment.
