SolarCity Wants To Take Net Metering Issue To Voters

Rooftop solar company SolarCity wants to take its fight over new solar rates to the voters.

The company is supporting a petition expected to be filed Monday that could take power away from the energy regulators at the Nevada Public Utilities Commission. The measure could go to the ballot if supporters gather enough signatures.

Nevada lawmakers passed a bill nearly unanimously last spring directing regulators to set new rates for customers with solar panels who sell energy back to the utility.

The law came as Nevada approached a cap on net metering.

Regulators approved new rates that raise base charges for solar customers and reduce reimbursements.

Commissioners say it phases out subsidies traditional customers pay to support rooftop solar installations. SolarCity says it makes their business model unworkable in Nevada.
