Lawyers for a family made famous by the TV show "Sister Wives" are asking a federal appeals court to uphold a ruling that decriminalized polygamy in Utah.
The case is before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver on Thursday. The Utah attorney general is appealing a ruling that struck down key parts of a state law banning polygamy.
State attorneys say they don't plan to prosecute plaintiff Kody Brown and his four wives if the law stands. But they say it should nevertheless stay on the books because it helps curb other abuses connected with polygamy, like underage marriage.
The Brown family maintains their reality show demonstrates polygamous unions can be as healthy as monogamous ones. They say the Utah law violates peoples' right to privacy and freedom of religion.
