SolarCity Lays Off 550 Employees In Nevada

SolarCity says it has laid off 550 Nevada employees, about a quarter of its workforce.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that the company announced two weeks ago that it will halt the sale and installation of rooftop solar panels in the state after NV Energy cut the rate it pays solar customers for extra power.

Companies like SolarCity say the new rates make solar too expensive. NV Energy argues that solar customers had avoided paying some of the utility's fixed costs in the past.

SolarCity says it will close three Nevada warehouses and has started dismantling its Las Vegas training center. The company plans to keep some people in Nevada to help customers and will relocate some employees.

For now, the rooftop solar provider plans to keep its Las Vegas headquarters open.
