A committee focused on tracking down waste and inefficiency in Nevada's K-12 education system will kick off its work by taking a look at building and maintenance costs.
Members of the new Spending and Government Efficiency Commission, also known as the SAGE Commission, held their first meeting on Tuesday. The 12-member group created by the Legislature is chaired by former state superintendent Dale Erquiaga and includes retired school district employees, businesspeople and representatives from nonprofits.
The group will start digging into building costs when it meets again in February. It's expected to turn its attention later in the year to personnel costs, which account for about 90 percent of school spending and are largely driven by local union contracts.
The commission's recommendations could become bills or budget items in 2017.
