The UNLV school of Journalism and Media Studies has been under scrutiny after a report questioned how the school was being run.

The School of Journalism and Media Studies at UNLV is being examined under a microscope this week - being scrutinized in a way that, perhaps, it’s not used to.

Last week the Las Vegas Review-Journal published a study that UNLV itself commissioned. Two academics from out-of-state wrote the study, which heavily criticizes how the journalism department is run.

And it is critical of the department’s chairman, Larry Mullen, who talked to KNPR's State of Nevada about the report.

Mullen said he actually welcomed the information in the report, even when it was critical of him.

"This outside corroboration for me was a very positive thing in terms of getting change done," Mullen said.

He said he understands there are problems with students finishing the program in a timely matter and with having more hands-on learning opportunities.

Mullen said those problems are being addressed with bigger classes and more classes being offered in the summer.

The school is also beefing up its radio program, which will give more students a chance to work in a radio studio.

"We want to solve them for the students," Mullen said.
