The new Tesla gigafactory is expected to bring business to Northern Nevada but do they have the workers?

Tesla Motors decision to build its $5 billion battery gigafactory, a partnership with Panasonic Corp., is producing tremendous benefits for the Northern Nevada economy, according to economic development officials.

Over the last 18 months, companies large and small have found a home in the Reno-Sparks area. Tesla’s decision to build its 5-million-square-foot factory in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center has also caused other businesses to take a second look at the region.

According to the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, 34 companies either expanded or relocated to Northern Nevada last year.

Already in 2015, EDAWN is averaging 11 or more visits a month from prospective new businesses. The latest company to commit to the region is IMMY Inc., a 3D augmented reality and virtual reality imaging firm has opened a new research and development, fabrication center in Reno.

“This is a great addition to the region’s growing technology sector,” said Mike Kazmierski, CEO of Reno-based EDAWM. The focus of the company’s new facility is prototype development and low-volume production.

So, what could possibly derail Northern Nevada’s economic expansion? Politicians, business owners and economic development officials believe the region’s workforce will be challenged to meet the demand of new businesses, many who demand greater technical skill.

Kazmierski told the Reno Gazette-Journal EDAWN is revising its long-term strategic plan and will unveil its new outline next month. The updated plan is expected to focus on job retention.
