Bill would Bar Lobbyists from Giving Gifts to Lawmakers

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would bar lawmakers or their family members from accepting gifts from lobbyists.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson presented SB307 on Wednesday.

Existing law allows lobbyists to give up to $100 in gifts to a legislator in a calendar year, and allows them to give lawmakers an unlimited amount of free food, drink and entertainment.

The bill would ban those gifts, and would only allow lobbyists to buy food, drink and entertainment for lawmakers at events to which all lawmakers are invited.

It would also require candidates to file campaign finance reports more than twice as often as they do now.

Janine Hansen of the Independent American Party said the frequent reporting requirements would be burdensome for minor party candidates and favor incumbents
