Recreational Marijuana, Gun Check Petitions Move To Assembly

Voter petitions that would allow recreational marijuana use and expand background checks on gun purchases cleared the Nevada Assembly Judiciary Committee today without recommendation.

Committee Chairman Ira Hansen, R-Sparks, said the petitions will be moved to the full Assembly where it would be up to the leadership whether to schedule a vote. Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, R-Las Vegas, has said the issues would not be considered.

If no action is taken by Friday, the petition initiatives will automatically go on the 2016 election ballot.  Initiative Petition 1 would legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, and Initiative Petition 2 would require background checks on certain firearm purchases.
