A Senate committee has passed a Republican bill that would restrict people convicted of domestic violence from having a gun, but would also broaden the definition of justifiable homicide.
SB175 passed unanimously on Friday and heads to the Senate floor for a vote. It's sponsored by Republican senators and Assembly members.
The bill would prohibit a person from owning a gun if they've been convicted of domestic violence, or purchasing one if there's a restraining order filed against them.
It would also expand the definition of justifiable homicide to include killings that take place in defense of an occupied home or vehicle.
Democrats voiced concerns that the original bill justified too many homicides, but Democratic Sen. Aaron Ford said he supported the bill after it was amended.
