The Las Vegas City Council voted today not to challenge a petition initiative against public funding for a downtown soccer stadium, meaning voters will get to vote the issue in the June general election.
The council considered whether to appeal the decision by a Clark County District Court judge that the petition had enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.
City Attorney Brad Jerbich said the petition is invalid because of its wording, which seeks to amend the city charter. He said petition initiatives can only amend ordinances.

The stadium plan was scrapped after Major League Soccer informed the city last month Las Vegas would not get an expansion franchise.
