The Clark County Commission voted to extend its contract with The Animal Foundation for five years.
The commission voted Tuesday after months of debate about the issue. The Animal Foundation is an open admission shelter that handles legal holds of animals from Clark County and the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.
There was strong opposition to the move by supporters of a no kill shelter, which wanted to open a competing shelter. No Kill Las Vegas told KNPR's State of Nevada it wanted to reduce the number of animals that are euthanized. The organizer said Las Vegas is woefully behind the times when it comes to caring for stray animals.
The Animal Foundation defends its record and says it has made strides in keeping down the number of animals that are euthanized at its facility.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, the shelter's contract is worth $4.1 million annually.
