Nevada Rancher Cliven Bundy and his supporters went to the Carson City Tuesday to pitch the Assembly on a proposed bill that would take back land from the federal government.
AB 408, sponsored by Las Vegas Republican Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, would force the feds to seek state permission before using land in Nevada, and takes away the federal government's right to water on such land.
But the state's Legislative Counsel Bureau has said the bill would likely be challenged -- and defeated -- in a court if it became law. According to Las Vegas Sun political reporter Kyle Roerink, though, Assemblywoman Fiore is well aware of that possibility.
"She definitely knows that, and the Assemblywoman, if she is known for one thing, it is certainly making a statement," he told KNPR's State of Nevada. "I think this is a base-rallying type of tactic here to just keep the national attention on the issue."
Roerink said even if AB 408 passes the Assembly, it won't go any further.
"It's never going to land on the governor's desk," he said. "Speaker Hambrick -- he'll probably put [the bill] in a drawer."
