Is The Effort To Put The Downtown Soccer Stadium To The Voters Really Dead?

Opponents of spending millions of city taxpayer dollars for a downtown soccer stadium got some bad news last week.

Word has leaked that their petition to put the stadium to a vote of the people on the June ballot has failed. According to the Clark County Election Department, a random sample of 500 signatures found only 355 were qualified voters in the city of Las Vegas.

In a split vote last month, the city council approved more than $50 million in public money to help build the stadium, which could house a Major League Soccer franchise. The rest of the project is being funded by Cordish Companies and Findlay Sports and Entertainment.

After the vote by the city council, council members opposed to public funding tried to get the issue before the voters that was rejected by council members who support the stadium.

City Councilman Bob Beers voted against the proposed stadium and was one of three city councilmembers who spearheaded the petition drive to put the issue before voters.

He disagrees with the election department ruling, saying in a tweet Friday the petition drive received three times the number of signatures needed by law.
