The Voice Of The Old West

Do you know of a town with a population of a couple hundred souls that runs its own radio station? Now you do, and it’s Goldfield, Nevada.

If you drive up the US 95 toward Tonopah, it might surprise you to find yourself in Goldfield. This semi-abandoned ghost town is not that ghostly, with its lively radio voices flowing out on FM waves. While passing through there, tune in to KGFN 89.1 and you will hear The Voice of the Old West, as the station’s billboard suggests.

Radio Goldfield sprang up in 2002 as a pirate station. It ended up on the radar of the Federal Communication Commission pretty fast, though, and had to shut down for a while. But Sen. Harry Reid, D-NV, stepped in and clinched a deal with the FCC, allowing it to re-open if all prerequisites were met.

The station is maintained largely by volunteers who have always dreamed of running their own show.

“We have a number of hosts, all of which I have trained,” says the station’s Program Director Carl Brownfield. “There are tons of people that’d love to have their radio show. Where can they do it? And here we are.”

Acoustic music, bluegrass, folk, Country – if that’s what you’d like to tune in to but are outside of KGFN’s coverage, c heck out their website with rich downloadable audio archives
