Supreme Court: Amazon Doesn't Have To Pay For Security Check Time

The Supreme Court has ruled that employees for Amazon do not have to be paid for time spent waiting to go through security checks at the end of their shifts.

The justices said federal law does not require companies to pay employees for the extra time because it is unrelated to their primary job duties.

The case was brought by two former workers at an Amazon warehouse in Nevada. They were employed by Amazon contractor Integrity Staffing Solutions, Inc. They claimed they wait up to 25 minutes to clear security before they could go home.

Business groups worried that employers would have to pay out billions of dollars in retroactive pay for workers, if the court had ruled in the plaintiffs’ favor.
