Education Department Slow To Revoke Licenses After Arrests, Report Says

LAS VEGAS - State auditors say it took the Nevada Department of Education an average of one year to find out that licensed teachers had been arrested, and even more time to revoke their licenses.

The findings were published in an audit released Tuesday by the Legislative Counsel Bureau and based on a sample of 13 license revocation cases.

Auditors say it took between one and 1,200 days for the office to become aware that a licensee had been arrested. They said the department didn't always track the cases and didn't revoke licenses in a timely fashion.

State Superintendent Dale Erquiaga said the office has made changes to address the issues.

He noted that local districts were quick to pull teachers from the classroom upon arrest, even if licenses weren't revoked quickly.
