Kaboom! Pow! Crash! Blam! The colorful, artistic and graphic world of comic books has taken a life of its own due to popular comic conventions attracting thousands, big box office movies and the instrumental leaders who have shaped the industry over time.
For some reason, a lot of people tend to think of comics as a boy thing. Many of the most popular comic superheroes tend to be men, but the fact is, women have played just as big of a role in the industry as men have.
Documentary film "She Makes Comics" sought out some of these women, and celebrates them as creators and fans who have been involved since the beginning. Wesleyan University graduate and director of the film, Marisa Stotter, said Indie comics have had women characters that break the typical stereotypes women are often portrayed as -- damsels in distress, for instance, or the busty object of affection.
Interviews from the film include Karen Berger, former executive editor of DC's Vertigo imprint, Comic-Con International's Jackie Estrada and underground comix creator Joyce Farmer. The movie is a co-production by Respect! Films and Sequart Research and Literary Organization, and was primarily funded through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, raising more than $54,000.
Stotter will be a guest at the Vegas Valley Comic Fest Saturday, Nov. 1, that runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.
