NLV Youth Facility Contractor Faces Fines

A not-for-profit contractor operating a secure youth facility for 50 males in North Las Vegas is facing $5,000 daily fines after multiple concerns were identified in an operational review, a state official told lawmakers.

Division of Child and Family Services chief Amber Howell told the Legislative Commission's Audit Subcommittee on Monday the state can terminate its contract with Rite of Passage-Red Rock Academy if conditions don't improve. But the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Howell also noted recent improvements at the facility, saying her agency is monitoring it closely. The subcommittee reviewed a report on four of 63 facilities for children being operated in Nevada.
