Supporters of a ballot measure to remove mining from the Nevada constitution say the industry has a sweetheart deal that keeps it from paying its fair share in taxes.
Opponents of Question 2, however, say the measure is the first step toward raising taxes and discouraging mining companies from doing business in the state. The remarks came during a debate aired Thursday, Sept. 9, on Vegas PBS.
Attorney James Wadhams argued against the measure, while Bob Fulkerson of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada argued in favor of it. Question 2 would strike out a portion of the constitution that puts a 5 percent cap on a tax of the net proceeds of minerals. Mining language has been in the constitution since Nevada became a state.
