State Refusing CCSD Request To Hire Temporary Teachers

With schools opening in two weeks, the Clark County School District is unable to hire teachers on temporary licenses to relieve a looming shortage. Human resources chief Staci Vesneske tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal the district is about 650 teachers short of the approximately 18,000 needed on its more than 350 campuses. 32 schools might have to start classes with at least five teacher vacancies.

District officials say the Nevada Department of Education won’t grant the temporary licenses to new teachers who meet experience or degree standards but need time to meet state requirements.  Department educator effectiveness director Dena Durish says temporary licenses were allowed last year as emergency relief after state lawmakers created zoom school programs for students learning to speak English. Doing so again might result in the loss of federal funds.
