Washoe County Buys Silver Lake Land

Washoe County and the Nevada Department of Wildlife have jointly purchased more than 67 acres of sensitive land at Silver Lake, a vital migratory bird stopover north of Reno.  Wildlife department spokeswoman Laura Richards says the purchase announced Friday will  benefit waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds as well as provide the public with additional wildlife viewing opportunities.

Located in the North Valleys, the land will be managed and owned by the county for bird habitat, natural resource management and public recreation. The price was negotiated at $10,000 below the appraised value of $40,000.

Over 500 acres of public open space already was owned at Silver Lake by the county and Nevada Land Trust. County Commissioner Bobbie Weber says a multi-agency partnership ensures Silver Lake will be preserved for future generations.
