Few Las Vegas Jobs Require Math and Science Skills

There are few jobs advertised in Las Vegas that require much training in science, technology, engineering or math, or STEM, this according to a new Brookings Institution study.

According to ads for jobs in the first quarter of 2013, only one third of jobs advertised required STEM skills. It places Las Vegas 82nd of 100 metro areas in the study. A larger percentage of jobs advertised were for sales and food and retail. The study also found that it takes longer for employers to fill those jobs requiring STEM compared to other jobs.

The think tank did find that Las Vegas has one of the nation's highest percentages of job vacancies requiring so-called STEM skills for applicants with less than a college bachelor's degree.
