Court Costs Affecting Indigent Defendants

In Mohave County, Arizona, increased court costs are affecting the county’s ability to provide counsel for indigent defendants. The Havasu News says the increased costs stem from changes in Arizona’s child welfare system, which has led to more hearings about possible termination of parental rights.

Mohave County Indigent Defense Administrator Blake Schritter has asked for more funding for attorneys connected with Child Protective Services.  By the end of 2014, filings in juvenile dependency cases are expected to have doubled from 2012 totals in Mohave County.
