Union Workers Set Downtown Las Vegas Strike For June 1

The Culinary and Bartenders Unions have called for a strike against nine casinos in downtown Las Vegas starting on June 1. The strike will last until a fair contract settlement is reached, the unions said in a statement Wednesday.

Some 3,000 unionized workers will walk off their jobs at 5 a.m. on June 1. If no contract is reached, the unions will picket The D, Binon’s Four Queens, Fremont, Main Street Station, The Plaza, Las Vegas Club, El Cortez and Golden Gate. The Golden Nugget casino reached a five-year agreement with the union last month.

“Our members downtown deserve to earn a decent living by working hard under a fair contract,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union. “They should not be left behind as hundreds of millions of new investments pour in for downtown revitalization.”

The union overwhelmingly approved a strike in March if bargaining failed to produce contracts. Members in February voted to end a contract extension approved in June 2013 and have approved a dues increase to cushion the financial blow of a walkout.
